27.Nov.2019 New rubber-based hotmelt PSAs for tape and label applications

Due to the high demand on pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) in the market, new synthetic rubber-based hotmelt PSAs have been carefully designed to give an excellent balance of properties which make them suitable for use as a general purpose permanent product either for PSA tape applications (MELTIS® SIS 1019) or fordecorative PSA labelling using both filmic and paper face stock (MELTIS® SIS 4618).

Adhesion of MELTIS® SIS 1019 to low surface energy substrates is outstanding leading to very strong bonding to various surfaces but particularly to carton board on which strong bonding can be expected. The formulation is designed to reach an optimum balance between adhesion and cohesion. The product has been approved for direct food contact as well. Therefore, closure of carton boxes containing food products is one particularly suggested application.

MELTIS® SIS 4618 shows an excellent adhesion to low surface energy substrates as well leading to paper tearing bonds with suitable label face papers. This product has a very good cutability (label conversion) imported by an appropriate balance of the formulation ingredients. It has been approved for direct food contact, too. Thus, among others, applying this PSA for thermal food labelling is recommended.

The data below compare the peel and shear properties of both POLY-CHEM GmbH products with typical commercially available hotmelt representatives (product A and B) to show the outstanding performance of MELTIS® SIS 1019 and MELTIS® SIS 4618.

Our MELTIS® products exhibit an excellent peel adhesion on stainless steel in the range of 26 N/25mm (MELTIS® SIS 1019) and 22 N/25mm (MELTIS® SIS 4618) and an outstanding static shear strength of more than 200 h at room temperature, in contrast to products A and B.

The peel values on PE and PP are comparable to that of the competitive PSAs. However, MELTIS® hotmelts exhibit a higher content of adhesion failure (AF) on PP while the market products lead to a mixture of adhesion and cohesion failure (AF/CF).

Generic viscosity curves are shown in the following figures, measured at 150 °C, 160 °C, 170 °C and 180 °C. The values are in a typical range for SIS products.
